Fighting water poisoning in the womb



Three generations of people living in Mae Toen village, Lampang province, have been blighted by iodine deficiency, resulting from water contamination caused by a local fluoride mine. Charnchai Khemkaew was born with physical and intellectual disabilities. When he was a child, his friends mocked him for his slurred speech, slow responses and abnormal walk, while neighbours told his mother she would have to take care of him for the rest of her life.
His mother, Boonhome, could only cry upon hearing these remarks.
